martinlivings: (Changed Priorities)
I had my first short story, "Ghost Card", published by Eidolon magazine way back in 1992. It was a huge thrill, of course, but nothing compared to what happened later.

"Ghost Card" was listed in the Recommended Reading in Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, the massive anthology published every year. I was over the moon.

In the sixteen years or so since then, I've managed to score a couple more honourable mentions in their pages. Never actually had a story reprinted there, of course, but that was always a dream of mine. It would have been the ultimate accolade for me, beyond any award or review. One of those things to do before you die kind of deals.

Unfortunately, that won't be happening. Year's Best Fantasy and Horror is no more.

The good news is, [livejournal.com profile] ellen_datlow has announced that she's working on a new annual best horror collection for Night Shade, so all is not lost. Nonetheless, YBFH was something special, and it's very sad to see it pass. These new economic realities post-meltdown are harsh indeed.

Thansk to [livejournal.com profile] girliejones for the heads-up on this one...

God, the temptation was overwhelming... pity I don't match almost all of the selection criteria... especially:

- Presentation skills (being media-friendly)

Oh dear... ah well, who wants to live on a tropical island paradise anyway? I'd much rather be here... in my office...

Yes.
