Boy, is my face red...

You know, when writing a story for a competition, it's usually a good idea to read the criteria quite closely. Example - the AHWA Halloween competition. I skimmed the criteria... yeah, Halloween, 250 words, blah blah blah, and wrote a couple of stories for it.

I just polished up the one I wanted to send, and was about to send it when something in the instructions caught my eye:

The prize will be awarded to the entry which is judged to be the best opening to a Halloween-inspired tale.

Opening?

OPENING????

Damn, I wrote a complete Halloween tale for it! Doh!

Back to the drawing board... hmm, I wonder if Shadowed Realms would like it? ;)

Doesn't work that way, Martin! You know the SR boss lady don't read no blogs, so ya just gonna haf ta submit the thing the proper-like way.
A hint, though. Give it a couple of days and an extra draft or three. Her editorial axe has been out lately and ready for the choppin'!

Hey, I was always going to, but it might be a little too Halloween-specific for SR, I suspect. Maybe I'll just hold onto it until a market for a Halloween-specific 250 word short story comes along. ;)
