And...
Uh...
Well, it was pretty bad, actually. Slow, dull, unengaging. It needed a good script editor, and a director who knew how to direct actors. And zombies. It was inconsistent and uneven. The makeup was bad. The pacing was bad. It just... didn't work. It was like a short film with one joke, stretched endlessly into ninety minutes.
But worst of all was Billy Connelly in the lead role. It was impossible to get past. The man can't act. Or perhaps he can, but in this movie, he just didn't. It's harder than people ralise to act like a zombie (something the immeasurably superior Shaun of the Dead made fun of), and Connelly just doesn't do it. He needed to watch the zombie he was effectively based on, Bub from Day of the Dead, to see exactly how it's done. Instead, Connelly turned in an awful performance, mawkish and twee. With someone else in the role, someone less recognisable and, yes, a better actor, the film would have been average, maybe even better than average.
Some cute ideas, badly executed. 2 severed heads out of 5.
