Red Dwarf: Back To Earth

Uh... kinda shite, but perhaps less so than the last actual season. Pity about the half-arsed Blade Runner parody running through it.

Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead

Rather good. Surprising for a RBD episode. Enjoyed it a lot. Michelle Ryan can't act to save her life, but she looks good in burglarwear!

I've really liked Michelle Ryan in other things, but the dialogue and characterisation she was given was terrible! I *hated* her. When the Doctor stonewalled her at the end I was so happy.

Lara Croft Lite was still better than her character in Jekyll. ;)

I didn't mind her in Jekyll. I actually quite liked her in Jekyll.

I think we've talked about this before. Wait. What the hell is that on your LJ user icon?

Heh. I half-expected the Doctor to claim his device detected subatomic particles emitted by dangerously cliched characters.

Do I need spoiler space for quips?

"Wait, you're a gentlewoman thief who steals from a love of adventure? And, let me guess, you started out trying restore the family fortune squandered by a boozing gambling relative? And ... oh, no, you've probably got a heart of gold, too. No wonder there's holes in reality!"

The character was quite amazing in her shallowness, but I enjoyed the ep as well. "Better than the other specials" may not be high praise, but it may be good enough.

My favourite of all the specials is still "The Christmas Invasion", which was propped up by character work, followed by "The Runaway Bride"... which was propped up by character work. Hmm...

I was rather dissatisfied with them at the time, but maybe the bar has been sufficiently lowered by the Titanic and cyberman ones that I would think better of them now.

Given that it's Doctor Who, one of my benchmarks is "would I have liked this when I was eight?" Most of Christmas specials scrape through from that frame of mind.
